Biography
Angela Huyue Zhang is a Professor of Law at the Gould School of Law of the University of Southern California. Widely recognized as a leading authority on Chinese tech regulation, Angela has written extensively on this topic. She is the author of "Chinese Antitrust Exceptionalism: How the Rise of China Challenges Global Regulation" published by the Oxford University Press in 2021. The book was named one of the Best Political Economy Books of the Year by ProMarket in 2021. Her second book, High Wire: How China Regulates Big Tech and Governs Its Economy, released in March 2024, has been covered in The New York Times, Bloomberg, Wire China, MIT Tech Review and many other international news outlets. Angela is currently doing research on the regulation of artificial intelligence, with plans to teach and write on this topic in the coming years.
Angela has broad research interests in the areas of law and economics, particularly in transnational legal issues bearing on businesses. Her research has appeared in leading international law reviews such as Harvard International Law Journal, Yale International Law Journal, Stanford International Law Journal, as well as top peer-reviewed journals from other disciplines such as Management Science and China Quarterly.
Angela is a four-time recipient of the Concurrence Antitrust Writing Award, which selects the best articles published globally in the field of antitrust law each year. She received a British Academy/Leverhulme Small Research Grant (£10,000) in 2014 and two Hong Kong GRF grants, one (HK$637,440) in 2018 and the other (HK$ 656,825) in 2021. Angela is a twice recipient of the faculty research output prize and received the Outstanding Young Researcher Award from the University of Hong Kong in 2022.
Angela is a highly sought-after commentator on Chinese regulatory issues. She often speaks at prestigious antitrust conferences in the United States, Europe, and Asia. She is also frequently interviewed by major international media outlets and regularly contributes commentaries to the popular press.
Before joining the University of Southern California, Zhang taught at the University of Hong Kong, New York University School of Law, and King’s College London. Earlier in her career, Zhang practiced law for six years in Asia, United States and Europe. She worked as a bankruptcy lawyer at Debevoise & Plimpton in New York and as an antitrust attorney at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton in Brussels.
Angela received her LLB from Peking University, and her LLM, JD and JSD from the University of Chicago Law School. She wrote her doctoral dissertation under the supervision of former Judge Richard A. Posner. Angela is married to S. Alex Yang, a professor at the London Business School. Together, they have raised two very lively children and collaborated on several academic papers.
